Science Fair – THIS FRIDAY!   For this week: 1. Finish the board if that hasn’t been completed. 2. Prepare and practice your presentation for the judges. In class Friday, we discussed some guidelines for the presentation. It would be helpful to review this sheet in their folder. I tried to stress a few things . . . This is a short presentation. Do not retell everything you did. Just the highlights. Do not introduce yourself (you’ll be given a number). As you are speaking, refer to and point to your board and display. Notecards are allowed, if you need them. Plan for a 1 1/2 minute presentation, then about…

Science Fair Project   This week all experiments should be finished up and the process of putting information on the board should begin. We discussed the process of preparing the board in class Friday. On the last page of the science fair folder, there is a checklist to follow for the board. Your board doesn’t have to look exactly like the picture, but it does need to flow in order of the scientific method. I stressed for them to be sure to write neat and the appropriate size where it can be read easily. We will have some judges from local colleges, so we’d like to make a good impression!…

Just in case you aren’t getting my emails, here’s the assignments for the next week: Science Fair Project If you haven’t finished reading about your project, finish that up this week. Most of your time this week should be spent on the experiment portion of the project. After the experiments are completed, information should be filled out for the Data Analysis and Conclusion pages in your science fair folder. Be sure to remember to bring the science fair folder Friday. I will be checking them during lunch. Next week, we will begin putting all the information on the tri-fold board. So, if you do not have the board, be sure…

    Chemistry and Physics, 3rd – 6th grade

Reading Begin reading Electrifying our World. We will have a special speaker, Derek McGill, teaching our class. With this being his area of expertise, I believe this Friday will be a very interesting class! It would be great if the kids have some previous knowledge before his presentation on Friday. So, feel free to read the entire chapter, if you’d like. Science Fair For this week, our goal is to begin gathering your resources and request any library books you may need. We need to have everything together by the start date in two weeks (meaning a question, resources, and supplies). I would like for them to read about their…

Some aren’t getting my emails. So, here’s what I emailed everyone for this week.   Reading Begin the Thermal Energy chapter. Science Fair –  Date: April 5 This week in class, we will begin discussing the scientific method: Question, Hypothesis, Procedure, Data, Conclusion. Please read over the first part, “Question” with your child (see below). I want to make sure they really understand this concept as they develop a project for the science fair. For those who have already decided a topic, please come to class ready to share your “Question.” For those who haven’t decided a topic, this guidance in developing a question may be helpful. For the undecided,…

Your child should have a letter and a syllabus from me. Since everything is listed on the syllabus, I will not be posting assignments here. If there are any updates or changes, I plan to email. You should have received an email from me already. If you did not, let me know. Thanks! For this week, finish reading the Gastropods and Worms chapter. Also, please practice your parts for the program. This past Friday, there were a few who didn’t know what they were going to say. Most could tell me a couple sentences on the spot. However, it would be better to be fully prepared on that day, so there’s not stalling to think of something to say. The syllabus says there’s a field trip this Friday, but there is not. That field trip was the Celebrate Wildlife Day at the Natchez Trace that got moved up. Sorry for any confusion.

Happy Spring!     Welcome Arthropods! Hoping for some beautiful spring weather this week! Encourage your children to get outside! Let them discover and explore this week! Take pictures of spider webs and send them to me. Catch an insect, centipede or millipede (no worms, slugs, or snails, those are the following week) and bring to show and tell on Friday. Habitats are fun additions as well. Outdoor observation is the goal this week. If you’re having a hard time finding insects, look under wet leaves and rotting logs. Or, go out at night and turn flashlights on. I’ve attached a sheet to fill out about the Arthropod you find.…

We had such a good time Friday on the field trip! The kids did great and I know they learned a lot. Each child should have received a chrysalis for a painted lady butterfly, along with an instruction sheet. We’re on the last step in section 2 on the instruction sheet. So, if you haven’t already, you should hang your chrysalis in a safe place. If you don’t have a butterfly house, then a jar with holes, or an insect box from dollar tree should work, depending on how long you’d like to keep it. For this week, read the first part of the Arthropod chapter (page 229-238) if you…

Slight Syllabus Change I need to change the syllabus just a little bit. I think it would be helpful to read the Arthropod chapter a little early, since we will be visiting the MSU Arthropod Zoo on Friday. Being familiar with vocabulary words and species may be helpful- especially if they ask us any questions! Read however much of the chapter you have time for this week.   MSU Field Trip Friday: We will meet promptly at 8:00 Friday morning in the church parking lot. Please encourage your kids to use the restroom quickly. Then load up in the vehicles. All they need will be a QUICK sack lunch, drink, snack,…
