Shurley English 6 for May 15th

Hello my budding grammarians and writers! You have made it through your Shurley English studies; it is the end of an era!  You will continue to hone and use your skills for the rest of your life.  I am very proud of all of you! Your last lesson is Lesson 13, “The Sick Lion,” of your Classical Composition.  Be as creative and descriptive as you can, and don’t forget to label your FOD’s. I have enjoyed having each of you in class this year.  I look forward to hearing about your future accomplishments over the coming years! God’s blessings, Mrs. Leckie

Shurley English 6 for May 8th

Hello! You, my students, are doing wonderfully on your compositions.  I am so proud of each of you, and I know you will excel in the next phase of your writing education.  Please, never take for granted the communication skills you are acquiring through classical composition! This week please complete Classical Composition, Fable Stage, Lesson 12 “The Mountain in Labor.”  This is a very short fable I found somewhat amusing.  I can’t wait to see how you rethink and compose it. Please turn in the final draft on Friday. Have a great week!

Shurley English 6 for May 1st

Welcome to May!!! This week your assignment is Classical Composition, Fable Stage – Lesson #9 “The Thirsty Pigeon.”  Complete the lesson and email or text me a copy of your final draft by Friday.  I chose this lesson so that we could get practice using a few more FODs.  They are topographia, mimesis, and topothesia.  Remember, you do not have to keep the same characters in your story or even the same plot, but your story should illustrate the commonplace or moral of the story. And just a reminder, your composition teacher for next year will continue to use the Fable stage book along with new books, so don’t throw this…

Shurley English 6 for April 24th

This week finds us at Chapter 28 in Shurley English 6.  The only thing I require from this Chapter is the vocabulary.  I will send out a Vocabulary #1 worksheet on Monday. For composition, I would like you to start and finish Lesson 6, “The Flies and the Honey-Pot.” There are three new FODs in this lesson, pragmatographia, prosopopoeia, and sermocinatio.  Be sure to include these in your re-telling. If you have any questions please give me a call or text. Audrey Leckie (662) 397-3234

Shurley English 6 for April 17th

This week we tackle Chapter 27. Use References 77-79 to learn your way around a library.  This is unfortunate timing since we can’t go to a library, but I will try to find an online video that can be helpful and send you the link..  I’ll also be sending your Vocabulary #1 worksheet later today.  There is a Test B this week, but I do not require it. For composition this week, I would like you, with your parents’ permission, to send a friendly letter to two people- maybe a grandparent, elderly church member, Sunday school teacher, pastor, shut-in member, first responder, or friend.  When you are finished have a…

Complete Lessons 1-3 and take the Test in Lesson 4.  Study Reference 76 to learn the Parts of a Book. For Composition, write your final draft of Lesson 4, “The Hare and the Tortoise.”  Don’t forget to underline your figures of descriptions and label them.

Shurley English 6 for March 27th

Good morning! Chapter 24 focuses on the business letter.  As you work your way through Lessons 1-4, pay attention to References 71-73.  Not the subtle differences between friendly letters and the more formal business letters. I sent your vocabulary worksheet via email for Vocabulary List #1. Your practice sentences focus on pattern 5, which have predicate adjectives.  Remember:  a linking verb will NEVER be followed by indirect/direct objects.  After linking verbs you will be looking for predicate adjectives/nouns.  Also, it is helpful to go ahead and mark all the prepositional phrases because the PrA’s and PrN’s will never be in prepositional phrases. Don’t forget the practice sections for Chapter 24 in your…

Shurley English 6 for March 20th

Hello! Things are working a little differently this week, but nothing we can’t handle!  I urge you to be diligent, patient, and helpful to your parents (particularly with younger siblings).  I am confident you will rise to the challenge and be a blessing to all those around you. This week, finish Chapter 23, Lessons 1-4.  I will wait to collect your tests and papers until we meet again unless our “social distancing” continues for more than a week or two. For composition, your final draft is due this Friday.  Some of you completed this last week, but perhaps skipped another section of the Lesson.  If that is the case, please…
