    Shurley English 6 for February 7th

    Finish Chapter 19, Lessons 1-4. For composition, rewrite the fable from Lesson 2, “The Ant and the Grasshopper.”  Be sure to include your three figures of description (FOD):  anemographia, dendrographia, & ethopoeia. Don’t forget to underline your FODs and label them at the end of their sentence. Everyone is doing a great job on their compositions.  Keep up the good work!

    This week complete Chapter 18, Lessons 1-4.  Everyone did a great job in class on Friday, and I am especially pleased with the Fable rewrites. For composition this week, read “The Ant and the Grasshopper” and complete “Three Plot Components” and Variations: Part 1.  We will continue with the lesson in class on Friday. Keep up the excellent work!

    Please finish Chapter 17 this week, except for Lesson 5, the writing assignment.  Chapter 17 deals with quotation rules, so study well References 48-51. For composition, type or rewrite your “Ant and the Chrysalis” story to turn in on Friday.  Don’t forget to underline your Figures of Description (FODs) and label them at the end of the sentence in which they are written.  For example:  A cool breeze tickled the ant’s back as he searched for food. (Anemographia)  The last thing to do on this lesson is to go over reduction (page 12, #2).  We will do the reduction together in class Friday. Make sure your line doesn’t go through your words…

    Hello!  We are NOW on Chapter 15. Please complete Lessons 1-4. For vocabulary list #1, I gave you a sheet with all the information but the sentence.  Study it, and make up a sentence using the vocabulary word.  Do not do Lesson 5. Classical Composition:  We started Lesson 1, The Ant and the Chrysalis in class.  Before doing the Three Plot Points on page 10, review the terms; recognition, reversal, and suffering. Next, do #2 under Variations: Part 1, page 11. Do Variations: Part 2 on page 13.  Then finish the outline on page 11.  We almost finished it in class.     Happy New Year!  I hope you enjoyed your break; I know I did!  Let me start by saying how thankful I am to have such industrious, courteous students, and thank you for all the Christmas goodies.  My family and I have enjoyed each one! For this week, we are in Chapter 16.  Please be prepared to share your Definition Poem from Lesson 1 Activity in class.  Complete Chapter 16 except for Lesson 5.     Last school week before Christmas!!! Finish Chapter 14, Lessons 2-5.  Make sure you are prepared for a quiz on the list of subordinate conjunctions from Reference 43.  There are 18 subordinate conjunctions listed, you need to be able to name 15 from memory to make a 100. This week’s writing assignment is the last one we will do in the Shurley English 6 book, at least  for a while.  You only need to write one essay.  Please do the assignment for Writing Assignment Box #1, WA #18  on page 259 of the Teacher’s Manual.

    Shurley English 6 for December 6th

    Welcome back from Thanksgiving! This week finish Chapter 13, Lessons 2-4.  There is no writing assignment this week.  Use the extra time to polish up on your synonym/antonym pairs. Parents:  When we start back to school in January, we will be switching from Shurley English 6 Composition to Classical Composition.  If your student doesn’t already have Memoria Press’ Classical Composition I, Fable Stage, this would be an excellent time to order it.  Thank you!
